Raccoons are being reported in almost all neighborhoods of San Francisco,
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. In addition to
their nuisance activities of knocking over garbage cans and aggravating our
dogs, raccoons are associated with the following problems:
|

|
Raccoons enter homes and other structures by going down chimneys, by
exploiting existing openings, or by ripping off roof vent covers or foundation
vent screens.
|

|
Raccoons will also enter
homes through pet doors installed for the convenience of the family’s cat or
dog. Once inside, the raccoons usually head straight for the pet’s food, and
when confronted, raccoons have attacked adults, children and/or pets. These
attacks cause people they have bitten or scratched to seek painful and
costly rabies shots to prevent fatal rabies infection.
|

|
In addition
to canine distemper and rabies, ninety percent (90%) of the raccoons removed
from Peninsula properties in recent years were found to be infected with a
common intestinal parasite known as Raccoon Roundworm or (Baylisascaris
procyonis). The animals can spread this infectious disease to humans and
other animals by expelling the parasites and the parisites’ eggs in the
feces that the raccoons deposit in the latrines they create in attics, on
roofs, or in yards. |

|
Prowling raccoons raid outdoor ponds killing fish and damaging aquatic plants.
These wild animals will also kill domestic fowl or birds kept in vulnerable
aviaries or bird coops. The killing may be done for food or the raccoons’
victims may go uneaten.
|

| Raccoons
can create serious damage once they get inside a home. They can cause damage to
attic insulation, heating ducts, electrical wiring and to sheet rocked walls and
ceilings under the latrines they create on attic floors |

| Raccoons
can decimate a lawn when searching for a meal of worms and grubs. Best to trap
and remove the animals when this happens as they usually return for another meal
when hunger sets in. |

| It is
usually quicker and less costly when we can trap the raccoon outside and remove
it from the property. When we have to enter an attic or crawlspace to find then
capture a destructive raccoon or to locate and extricate a litter of newborn
raccoons, the service entails greater risks, takes longer and may ultimately
cost more to remove the problem animals. When time is not the customer’s
primary concern, one way doors can be installed allowing the animal to leave but
not re-enter the home. Raccoon eviction fluid or paste can also be used to speed
up the coon’s departure. As is usually the case, prevention turns out to be the
best course of action, so its worth the time and money to inspect the chimney,
roof jacks, eave and soffit vents, crawlspace screens and doors before the cold
and rainy season arrives or in spring when the female raccoon starts looking for
a nice warm and dry place to raise her litter of five or more pups.
